A NOD TO THE PAST

OUR STORY

Scarlett Gasque was born from a love and respect for the vintage glamour girls of the 1940s, 50s and 60s, and a desire to bring traditional lingerie styles back into the mainstream…

Chloé’s maternal great-grandmother
born in Budapest

Our Heritage

a name with meaning

Since Scarlett Gasque is all about celebrating formidable women, it felt only fitting for Chloé to honour her rich heritage by naming her brand after celebrated women in her family.

“Scarlett” comes from Chloé’s maternal great-grandmother, a hard-working woman born in Budapest who raised her daughter (Chloé’s grandmother) with strength and tenacity and paved the way for her to immigrate to Canada. Scarlett was well read – she always had her nose in a book – and she enjoyed the glitz and glamour of old Hollywood cinema. She was also passionate about global politics. Despite her humble beginnings, Scarlett was an opinionated woman who was never afraid to speak her mind or tackle philosophical debates. And perhaps most importantly, she helped shape Chloé’s grandmother and mother into the kind, strong and resilient women they are today.

“Gasque” honours another influential woman in Chloé’s family – her paternal great-grandmother, Maude “Maysie” Gasque. Maysie was born in London, UK, and described as a pillar of strength to her husband, family and country. During World War II, Maysie joined the allied forces in Rome after its liberation from Nazi Germany as an assistant nurse, and continued to serve her country and the Crown with great honour even after being appointed Lady Martonmere of Blackpool in 1964. Maysie married Sir John Roland Robinson, who she affectionately called “Jack”, and who served as an MP for Blackpool South for 33 years before becoming the Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Bermuda.

LEADING LADIES

HOLLYWOOD bombshells, pin-up GIRLS and burlesque stars

At Scarlett Gasque, we draw much of our inspiration from the sensual, charismatic and charming darlings of the mid-20th Century. Including:

Jayne Mansfield

An iconic bombshell of the 50s and 60s who was known as the “Working Man’s Monroe”. She gained fame and pin-up status when she posed for Playboy in 1955 and was known for her bleached blonde waves, beautiful curves and signature love of the colour pink, as well as her unwavering self-confidence. Mansfield’s sense of style was unique and daring – she was a master of self-publicity and loved to push the limits of decency. Although people characterised her as a “dumb blonde”, she was incredibly intelligent, fluent in 5 languages and believed to have an IQ of 163!

Rita Hayworth

An actress popularly known as “The Love Goddess” and one of the most glamorous women in Hollywood history. Hayworth epitomised style and beauty, rising as a top pin-up star during World War II. She was also a trendsetter – Jean Louis, chief designer to the stars of the Golden Age even took her as his muse! Hayworth loved lace and silks, and was never afraid to wear figure-hugging dresses or bold florals. As an actress, she pushed the boundaries of what was considered acceptable in terms of sex appeal and she’ll forever be remembered for her striptease in Gilda (1946), considered by some to be the most famous scene in film history.

Josephine Baker

An American-born French entertainer, who became Europe's most popular and highest-paid performer. She worked for the French Resistance during World War II, and during the 1950s and 60s she devoted herself to fighting segregation and racism. Using the stage as her tool, she used comedy to subtly challenge social norms and engage with political issues. She was the first black woman to star in a major motion picture – the 1927 silent film Siren of the Tropics – as well as the first American woman to receive French military honours.

Elizabeth Taylor

One of the most beloved and beautiful actresses of all time who captivated people with her incandescent beauty, courage, open-nature and self-deprecating wit. Not only was she an Oscar-winning actress, but she was also a celebrated philanthropist who tirelessly worked to help people affected by AIDS and raised money to help fund research for a cure. She travelled all over the world to educate people about the disease, and created a lasting impact far beyond her films.

Dita Von Teese

The biggest name in modern-day burlesque and a ballerina turned striptease icon. Von Teese has been performing striptease since 1992 and is recognised for bringing the art of burlesque back into the spotlight with new elegance and sophistication. Often called the “Queen of Burlesque” and best known for her signature martini glass burlesque act, Von Teese is also a celebrated self-styled fashion icon who regularly tops best-dressed lists all over the world. With her signature red lips, cat-eye eyeliner and perfect black waves, Von Teese continues to promote old-school glamour and sex appeal to modern audiences.
